2003 25 merc

I got this motor here and reverse workd to back the boat then i hit foward and then i put it back in reverse and wont engage so i got home took lower unit off shaft works good up and down put it togather reverse works? then go to river put it in reverse and forward then reverse wont engage? Im clueless could it be linkage maybe? thanks for your help

I recently had the same problem with the smae exact motor. Here is the problem and solution. If you or someone else has had the lower unit off for any reason there is a washer that goes on at the top of the shift shaft. If mechanics are unfamiliar with these type merc motors when the lower unit comes off this washer can and will come off unknowingly to the mechanic. This little washer keeps the reverse from sticking for whatever reason. I found out and told my mechanic about it and he thought I was crazy until he found a service manual. He put a washer on the shift shaft and since then my motor has shifted like a dream. The washer fits just below where it goes on at the top of motor where you unclip it to take off the lower unit.
