I'm almost ready for the water. just a few minor details left. I tried this question in the Johnson motor section and the electrical section without much luck. I thought I'd check here for some advice. I have a '63 Johnson 40 hp electric start that is hanging on the back of the boat now and I installed a new key switch. the key switch has a terminal that is labeled M this terminal has continuity with ground when the switch is turned off. I assume this is to kill the engine. If that assumption is correct what in the engine do i hook it to? This engine is long past having color coded wiring, it's been to too many shade tree mechanics before I got hold of it.

Re: '68 Starcraft Remodel

M is for magneto. Black wire from one of the coils under the flywheel. You will notice on the key switch that there are actually two M's. One is direct usually and the other one is hooked to the vac. switch. It is hooked to the other coil wire on some. Older/smaller motors had no vac. switch and both the coil wires (on 2 cyl. engines) went to the 2 M's.

Did on my stuff anyway!
