I have about a 15 yo uniden that still works fine....... most of the dept's here never change frequencies but have gone to computers

I think most of ours have changed freqs several years ago. Seems like she can pick up les and less each year.

Yup that is due to the computers and cell phones in the cars... :(

Uniden used to sell refurbed units at a good saving

The probable reason why your getting less scanner traffic is due that they have gone to digital radios. The police get better call clarity but less range. As far as I know they don't make digital scanners yet. Most police detachments in BC have them now. I use to be an avid scanner listener but not any more.

Find out what frequencies your local public services are running and go from there. Are they digital,800 mhtz, edacs system, marcs system?

The newer radio systems use digitally encoded modulation and can use encryption. Cheap analog scanning days will be done for in the future, particularly if the FCC further narrows the bandwidth restrictions.
Nice digital scanners run about 500 bucks.....

It really depends on where you're at. Some small places will use their old equipment until they are forced to give it up.
