Mercruiser - What to do?

I have a 1985 4 Winns with a 140 Merc 4-cyl.
Has been a great boat for years.
I was running it in the driveway on muffs for about 20 minutes.
Went back out and noticed that the hose had popped off the muffs.
I turned it off and let it cool; then re-attached the hose.
It doesn't start any longer.
I noticed there is water in the oil and
compression is 35, 50, 40, 30psi.
I can only assume that the block/head is cracked.
Is it worth getting rebuilt?
What would a rebuilt engine cost?
How much would it cost to have it installed?

Just looking for some options.
Thanks for any help you can provide.
Neil.

Re: Mercruiser - What to do?

Why do people walk away from boats on muffs with the engine running... ???? ???

Till you take the head off you don't know anything, but my advise....

Sounds like it's time to turn that 1985 140hp into a 2010 3.0litre.... Full rebuild is still only going to be a 1985 engine.... update the whole package to the latest, get a nice new system and a warranty and not have to worry about anything while you're boating... It's a great feeling...
