FishHunter007, sounds like a good idea. I like you're plan and believe you are doing a great job, I in no way meant to discourage you. I just wanted to make sure you was informed and understood about the weight, so you will be safe also I would hate to have seen you put all that time and work into it and find out it was too heavy.

Re: 1972 Lund 14' Project

I like the layout. I have what I believe is the same size boat (1436) and will be starting my rebuild in a couple of weeks. Did you include any flotation foam? I ask only because I didn't see any. I have the same concern as others, being the weight and diminished free board. I'm interested in how your initial test will go. Also, I plan to keep my bow deck as low as possible. I'm expecting a bit of side to side instability at the front V due to the width. I'd rather go higher so I'm interested how your works out. Keep us posted.

Re: 1972 Lund 14' Project

I did not add any additional foam as of yet. I thought I would test it out as-is first and see how that goes. However, there is previous foam under the back bench and the front bench, so there is some.

I will definitely keep updating as I go. I am kinda at a stand-still right now as the weather here has just gotten to the point where its 40 degrees on a good day. I was planning on waiting to paint the interior/exterior until the weather is good enough to paint. And until the interior paint is done, I am going to wait on the electrical.

That being said, does anyone have any recommendations for painting temperature? From what I have read, it looks like I need around 65 to get a good paint job on it.

I think 60-65 is about the lowest temp to paint. I've been waiting for it to warm up so I can put gluvit down in my aluminum boat to stop/prevent rivet leaks. I will be doing that tomorrow.

Have you considered this?

Fishhunter where are you located? We just hit the 40s here in Michigan today for the first time in a while:)

Re: 1972 Lund 14' Project

I am located in South Dakota, so pretty similar weather. We just it 40 within the last day or two for the first time this year. I had not considered putting gluvit down. To be honest, I didn't know it existed. Just did a quick search, looks like its a water-proof epoxy to prevent leaks around rivets? Is this something I can buy at lowes? or would I have to order it or go to a marine store? Thanks all the help and support, this is a great website.

Re: 1972 Lund 14' Project

I ordered mine online right here at iboats. I had found a cheaper price at a different site...but after shipping iboats is usually cheaper. Nice to support the site to since the info saves us all lots of $$:D

South Dakota ya say, cool:) Are you looking to use the rig on lakes or rivers?

I've been thru there before and remember lots of pretty good size rivers around. The gluvit is worth the $$ as it will flex with the hull and prevent leaks for many years. All the experienced folks on this site swear by it.

The 2lb kit(around 50 bucks) is good for boats up to 18'... so if you have a buddy with a canoe or something...you may have extra;)

Re: 1972 Lund 14' Project

I will look into the that. In the boat, there is a green substance around most of the rivets, could be the gluvit? My buddy and I do most of our fishing in lakes around here. About the only river worth fishing near me is the Missouri, and I don't really wanna take the 14 footer out on that.

Progress on the boat has pretty much been halted due to weather. My buddy has the title and I'm in the process of getting that info and contacting lund for the actual weight capacity of the boat just to be sure. In a few weeks, we should be able to get the boat into a heated garage to paint the interior and exterior. After that, pretty much just a matter of electronics and wiring. I will update as soon as possible.

It sure could be gluvit. It does have a greenish tint to it.

if weight is an issue you could redo the frames in plywood, use 1x1 in the corners glue and screw it would be as strong and lighter

Re: 1972 Lund 14' Project

My gluvit is not green, it is clear brownish. It could be a zinc chromate primer for aluminum, sometimes this is green. I also had this odd green stuff form in the area of my boat that had a lot of oxidation. it turned a greenish color when i dried it out really good. I was reading through the forum, im glad somebody said something about that preassure treated and the weight. Both were concerns i had. If those 2x4's end up weighing to much, next time you could always use 2x3's, it would cut down a little on weight

Re: 1972 Lund 14' Project

Here's an update on my project. The interior is pretty much done, just waiting for the weather to warm up so we can paint the interior and exterior. The wiring is all hooked up and ready to go.

I ended up calling Lund and was told the capacity is 809 lbs. By my calculations, with 2 people in the boat, we are going to be very close to that limit. We are gonna attempt to get it out on the water tomorrow for a test run, so we will have to see how the boat handles with the added weight.

fishhunter, nice rig, like your layout looks very fishable, reading thru your posts and pics, as said b4 weight, i hope you did not go thru all the time and effort overconstructing, still looks good, wish you all the best. keep at it. D

Re: 1972 Lund 14' Project

Finally got out on the water to test the boat. We ended up going to fort thompson, sd. The added weight definitely affected the freeboard. Didn't get a chance to get a video of the action but will next time I'm out. The boat worked well for two of us as far as weight goes, but I would be very hesitant to add a third person. Being as its a 14' boat on the missouri, we didn't go out very far past the bay. The wind picked up out of nowhere and the water got very choppy and next thing we knew we were surrounded by white caps and I was not feeling to well about the added weight. A couple waves brought some water in over the top of the front.

On calm water, the boat speed was affected as I had thought, (9.9 hp) motor doesn't go too fast anyways. When going full speed with the heavier guy in the front, we did notice some splashing from the front being much lower than normal.

If I had to do it again, I would have definitely used 1/2" plywood instead of 3/4" and did a few things to minimize the weight. We are gonna do a few more tests to determine if the added weight is going to be an issue or if we need to do some reconstructing.

Either way, we are going to keep this boat a small lake boat.

*Got one 16" walleye within 30 mins before the wind picked up

Congrats on wally, I'm a bit envious about that. Glad to hear you got to try it out.
