compression test and results

Im thinking of going to look at a 89 evinrude 175 hp today. What should the readings be on the cyc. Question 2 is are these good engines. Thanks

the compression should be within 10% of each other if you can take it out for a test run before you buy sometimes that's not possible though

properly maintained they are good engines. compression on the 6 cyclinders are lower than 2 and 4 cylinders, 90-100 psi.

most important is that all 6 reading are within 10 % of each other.

This 89 175 engine was a solid engine, underrated for hp at 175. It is closer to 193 at the propshaft. It's a detuned 235 and makes great torque out of the hole, yet runs strong at top end. The combination oil/fuel pump is nice, along with the huge 35 amp alternator. The quick start feature is nice when the engine is cold. The compression numbers are the key to engine condition. I'd want to see the engine runs and check for water in the lower unit oil.
