Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone can help me. Today I bought a 9.9 Johnson motor and the Hood was missing the Model # is MQ-10r. I looked it up on google and it looks like a 1964 model. I have found two hoods on Ebay that are from 1975 and 1987. Can either one of these fit my 1964 motor?, anyone know where I could bye oneif not?. Thanks

Re: missing 64 Hood or cowl?

MQ-10 is a 1964 9.5HP Johnson. The only covers that will work are from 1964 or 1965 Johnson or Evinrude 9.5 motors due to the position of the latch.

It's a 9.5 not a 9.9, that's why you had no luck on your search. These motors are famous for not running properly with the hood "on" due to various reasons, I wonder why it doesn't have a cowl????

The MQ-10 is not a 9.9HP outboard. It is a 9.5HP, which is an entirely different critter.

You need a hood from a MQ, though I do not know if all MQ hoods fit a MQ-10. Neither the '75 nor the '87 would fit. They go to 9.9s.

Try www.tcoutboard.com.

The reason the hood is missing could be because the MQs were notorious for developing exhaust leaks inside the hood that choked the engine. Check out the exhaust gaskets before you put a new hood on her.

I know they do- I have a 65 that runs like a sewing machine with the hood on, I was just wondering if it was missing cause of an exhaust problem. No mention of it going for a final flight in the first post

The 1966 through 1973 MQ 9? had the latch changed from a twistable knob on the removeable cowl to a latch lever on the base.

Dad had a 1965 9? since new and it was always a great motor. It had a lot of hours but it always started and ran flawlessly. We never had a problem with leaky bellows allowing exhaust to get sucked up from the water line into the hood. He did have the motor retrofitted with a motor mount fix issued by OMC for the early (64/65) 9?; after that it was the smoothest MQ I had ever run (I've run a few over the years).

There are actually an impressive number of features of interest to fishermen on those motors. Dad actually gave the motor to a hunting & fishing buddy when he decided to sell the house in 2007 and move into assisted living (he's 87 years old). I sort of wish I had latched onto it for sentimental reasons as much as practical reasons, but his friend has always looked out for him so dad did the right thing by giving him the motor.

Yep, I sold a 66 model on a little 12' Crestliner last summer. Not a bad running little motor, for the condition it was in. I've had the joy of replacing the lower boot in the leg on a few of these, which is often times one of their drawbacks. They're kinda tough to work on, when you work on anything below the powerhead. But yea, like TN-25 says, they 66 and new covers were different, than yours, because of the latch set up. The one I sold last summer had the latch on the base, rather than the cover.
