Hi, Just bought an ob and I've been told it was a 1989 model..But I checked with the numbers that I found from the ob
082082 first
872-8500 Second
6242403 Third
And got my conclusion that I got a 1983 instead. Can somebody help me to see if I am correct??

Re: Did I get Screwed???

Damn! What's the market price on these ob's these days?Unit seems to be in good condition...
I was thinking to use it with my 14ft aluminum boat but is kind of heavy ..
last question Is there a way to transform this ob from rope to electric start?
Thanks for the info.

A 25 hp from that period in good working condition where I live (Wisconsin) is around $400-$700. You mentioned that the motor seems heavy for the boat, if you want electric start, your going to need a battery which will add even more weight.

Re: Did I get Screwed???

Last year I bought My 25HP Mariner I was told it was a 1986, it turned out it's a 1983. It has 125 psi in both cylinders and for the price I paid I feel I did well.

Re: Did I get Screwed???

Any way you look at it, a motor from the 1980s is far from new and the value of a 1983 model would not likely be much different than for a 1988 model. Condition matters more than age at this point.

I would not bother with adding an electric start, especially if it is a tiller set up on the boat. Unless you can rob the parts from a broken down motor, the necessary parts would be very expensive. As someone mentioned, the battery would also add a considerable amount of weight.

Re: Did I get Screwed???

Thanks for all the input guys, I'm going to have a test very soon...(2-3days)
They told me 125psi in both cylinders, I mounted to my boat turn on the engine and runs fine,(N) shakes a little bit it's there anything I can do to get rid of that?
So far so good price was $350 cash...... (Broken hood latch)

$350, if the compression test is correct you did fine.
I would run some seafoam through the motor and change the plugs.

Re: Did I get Screwed???

Good motor. I have two of them, a 89' and a 98'. One with electric start and one pull start. Would not trade anything for both of them. They both idle a little rough but blowing 35hp rudes of the water with a 25 is well worth it. I think one of the biggest changes on the motor from your year to mine was the carb. Then my 98' is the same as my 89' except for Mercosil bores and a revised shift linkage. Both of mine are on 14' boats, one is aluminum. You should run about 35mph with a 12 or 13 pitch prop. Have fun.
