Outstanding questions...

Outstanding questions...

These are some things that I still need help on...

How do I fill all these holes previously drilled in my transom?

Do I use my little 3HP Johnson as a kicker?

What were those 2 dangling mounts for?

How do I get rid of those 4 platforms mounted to the hull?

Does the area in the bow where the keel and hull join need to be "filled" with Gulvits?

What kind of rivets are these used in the boat?

Do I need a vent fan in the console since the fuel tank is in there?
something on the lines of a bilge fan?
I could always just put in a 12v PC fan?

How do I prep the engine for paint?

Thanks for the help !!

refitted the top rail last night...

Going to cut and reweld the nose joint, and then I can test mount her!

Re: 1968 Starcraft Mariner V - Winter rebuild

Mounted the rail with stainless hardware..
This is only on long enough to figure a few things out...

Put the old deck back in it, and loaded the prototype console in the boat..

I know the boat is going to have a different feel then the stuff sitting on the floor...

All in all... I really like it..

The rail is a just the right height to hold onto while walking around...

There is also plenty of room in both the front and rear to fish...
I put an old bilge cover down to show where a mount might go..
Standing there I feel like I have alot of room...

The livewells are going to work well. I need to redesign them a bit, but the idea is solid.

I pulled a spare cooler out of the garage and put in the boat. It is smaller significantly than what I made up, which is fine... Ijust do not like the idea of opening 2 lids to get to it, as the cover for the cooler is going to be another seat..

I think I will make it storage underneath and the cooler above...

Re: 1968 Starcraft Mariner V - Winter rebuild

good progress being made!

Well with the holiday I figure many were busy (no replies to your questions)

Ezmobee and the tin boat guys can answer your questions far better than me,......

as for the holes in the transom...if they are small enough rivet and gluvit em??? ask the tinboat guys what rivets to use.

and heck why spare the gluvit....heck yeah.... seal up the bow keel and hull....why allow any chance of leaks!

cool....the foam mold livewell idea was a decent one...I helped YEA!

one day I hope to have a tin boat to tinker with....I follow a ton of tinboat threads......a fishing version like yours is what I envision.

that SS rail looks excellent.....good for the kids saftey too!

Re: 1968 Starcraft Mariner V - Winter rebuild

I had a top from another boat I was going to try to fab up.
The rails are to short, and to wide...

I might try to adjust them...

I was thinking, the holes in the transom wood area, I would just seal over with 5200 and sand smooth prior to paint.

The other holes are pretty big just below the transom wood portion, and may require welding or possibly stainless bolts, nuts, rubber washers and some 5200...??

Your doing a hell of a job..your prototypes and planning are inspirational...

Is that a seat or leaning post behind the console..i did see the seat you posted with the flip top...

Re: 1968 Starcraft Mariner V - Winter rebuild

it is going to be both...

A seat, covered cooler, under that storage, a leaning seat behind me, and a pole rack...

SCORE!

already made up the prototype for the leaning seat for me, but it was just to make sure it was right height...

it is 18 degrees here. And even with my wood stove the shop needs a few more things to be workable in this cold temps.

Plus, we have pplans Saturday night with work, I am cutting wood Saturday, and going to a football game Sunday...

No work this weekend...

and I answered one of my own questions...

I found one of the bilge pumps I had, has a pair of tabs for mounting it upright against the knee....

On the transom, I just used regular rivets after I drilled the holes out to the right size, Sanded the area and used a little JB Weld around the rivet edge. Filled the end with JB and sealed the inside

I think with closed ended rivets I will do the same for anything smaller...

I have a rivet gun, do the closed ended rivets use something special?

Re: 1968 Starcraft Mariner V - Winter rebuild

Nice work AZ she's gonna be a great fishing rig when you're done:)

How do I fill all these holes previously drilled in my transom?
Big holes aluminum patches, small holes JB weld

Do I use my little 3HP Johnson as a kicker?
For trolling that might be too small depending on how fast you troll:) I'm going to use my 5.5 as a kicker, great as emergency backup too

What were those 2 dangling mounts for?
looks like they were part of a swim platform/ladder

How do I get rid of those 4 platforms mounted to the hull?
angle grinder/drill, then sand and patch the holes

Does the area in the bow where the keel and hull join need to be "filled" with Gulvits?
I don't think you want to "fill" any large voids with gluvit, only seams and rivets. Those voids will be fine with air in as long as the seams are sealed

What kind of rivets are these used in the boat?
Closed end rivets I believe but RickAirMedic could tell you for sure, he's a metal worker:D I'm going to be looking into this for my SS soon as well.

Do I need a vent fan in the console since the fuel tank is in there?
something on the lines of a bilge fan?
I could always just put in a 12v PC fan?
a small fan and a few vents in the console should work

How do I prep the engine for paint?
Light sanding, primer, paint. EZ did a great job on his OB in his Jupiter restoration, I'd recommend checking that out

Re: 1968 Starcraft Mariner V - Winter rebuild

now there are some answers!!

I am not sure at what speed I troll...

We have not done much with the kids... so we will learn..

I figured the kicker to be as much a safety thing as anything else.. some security...

so to borrow someone else idea...

Tarp Cover Rail

I am so going to have to add this to my plans... Great idea in my book!

I hope to get some supplies this weekend and get some more done...

Yeah that tarp support was a great idea. I don't think your 3HP would get the job done too well as a kicker on that boat. I think you'd want at minimum a 5. I have a 4 that I used on my Jupiter and it was just adequate. However I will say the insurance of having it was priceless. The one lake we frequent is pretty dead during the week and had no tow services available. It was nice knowing I could still make it home in the event the big old motor died. Never had to use it fortunately. If you get a kicker and ever intend to try to rig some sort of EZ-steer system for it, make sure you allow for the kicker to be mounted on the port side. The steering linkages work much better from that side. I'm going to be moving my port swim platform on my SS to the other side when I replace my transom for that very reason.

Re: 1968 Starcraft Mariner V - Winter rebuild

long term, I wold prefer to have 50HP motor with a 9hp kicker...

Right now I have a 35 and a 3 that cost me nothing right now...

I will give her a shot and see...

So Port side? it seems to me that my steering shaft and linkage would be getting in the way, or hitting the kicker? I will review that also...

For now the major purpose of the kicker is getting back to shore...

Re: 1968 Starcraft Mariner V - Winter rebuild

I will be getting a sample of an aluminum decking material in the next couple weeks...

Looking at the pricing for their product, I may be looking to it as an alternative to the hassle of my deck...

It looks to be an initial investment of $400 + Shipping + rivets + some aluminum bar 1"x1/8" to mount it too...

Non slip, last forever, already painted...

I think it may cost maybe 20% more to put in, but be 100% easier...

Re: 1968 Starcraft Mariner V - Winter rebuild

20% isn't really that much if you plan on keeping the boat for some time.

Most kickers I have seen are on Starboard side, including the "donor" boat i purchased for the kicker transom. Will look into pros and cons.
