So today I found a real mechanic. He took the head, said the motor ran lean and scarred the walls. First he said he could put a new motor on for about $6300, so I ask him could it be repaired he said yes and will give me a price on Fri. IS IT WORTH FIXING, MOTOR WAS JUST LIKE NEW IT HAD BEEN SITTING FOR YEARS . ME BEING NEW TO THIS I JUST GOT IT TO RUN AND DOWN THE RIVER I WENT. SO I MESS THIS UP BY NOT CLEANING THE CARBS I THINK. HOW MUCH DO YOU GUYS THINK THIS IS GOING TO COST ME.

If you have the motor at home, why don't you do a simple compression check and see if your mechanic correct. You can buy a inexpensive compression tester at places like Harbor Freight. It is quite easy to do.

If you were running 50-1 gas to oil, I doubt you messed it up by giving it a run. These motors have fixed high speed jets. You could have been running lean at idle though. And of course, the previous owner could have caused a problem. I would suspect it would be very expensive to rebuild the motor. Plan on at least $1000

What model of motor are we talking about? And how old is it? Motors frequently cost more to fix than they are worth.

What does a new etec 40 cost?I'm sure its more than 6,300 but how much more could it be and you end up with a new state of the art motor.
They are selling low hour 2009 4 st. Yamaha 40s right here $4,100.60 day warantee.
