Hi, I am a new boater and have a nice 1993 Chris Craft with a OMC-Cobra 5.8L EFI engine that I want to maintain and get 100%. I was considering replacing the Trim sending unit myself - not working. Gauge is in the up position. Can someone give me a brief idea where the send unit is located, and what is entailed in a replacement job? Any manual that may describe the job in detail? Do I need to remove the stern drive to do this.

Also how can i confirm if is not just a bad gauge. Which i don't think.

Thanks

Jeff

Unless I am wrong your '93 is an OMC Cobra engine with a Volvo SX drive (it may have Cobras labels on it, but should still say SX and Volvo).

If so (mine is a '94 and that's the setup they were using then these years were the joint venture years between Volvo and OMC) the sender is on the starboard side of the drive under a black cover.

Turn your steering wheel left and you should see it just fine. It's in the yoke

It's item 86 here:

93 would be the older Cobra(non-Volvo drive). However, the trim sender is more than likely the same as that of the 94.

Thx for clarifying that Bruce. I can never remember what year the SX started, but I know I am right on the edge. Since the SX is based of the cobra housing design (the reason Volvo bought them) it's no surprise it's in the same place

You can't even go by the year of the boat. Many 1994 boats have the older Cobras becuase the boat buildersd were using up old stock. This is fairly common. For example, I have a fairly late 1998 boat and it has the Volvo LK series which is common in many 1997 boats.

True.. I was thinking the year the powerplants changed, but you are right. A 93/94 could have something a couple years older under the hood

The senders are different, the SX being on the hinge pin as stated, the Cobra has a lever type mounted on gimbal ring. Sierra has them now, 18-7634. 'nutcase

Glad to see these are in the aftermarket...I had to call about 5 dealers to find an OE one last year when I was looking for them....

no you need to turn the drive to the port side to see it and tilt it up a bit...but snaking that wire though the transom is a major pain..my mechanic made a mod where he drilled a hole through the transom mount to run the wire up the transom like a transducer wire...I can change it in about 10 min that way....
