i have the above boat and it has 3 bench seats that attatches to the sides of the boat. they go in to brackets on the sides.they are made of wood with the floatation under the seat, they do not attatch to the floor. the problem is the wood needs replacing, i believe it is oak 1 inch by 12 inches wide.would it be ok to replace with a 2 by 12 pne and cut the ends down to fit in brackets. i was thinking it wohld be more ridged than the 1 by 12. any ideas??? t

Sure, it would be O.K. These are easy to replace and not in standing water all the time but dry rot can occur. I would recommend sealing them well with a 1 part polyurethane like a spar varnish. I don't know that you have to go that thick but if you already have the materials then put them to good use.

I've done similar work on my 12' aluminum...decking, transom, benches, etc...and spar varnish has worked well. I used minwax stain and seal also and it beads and repels water.

Is yours a sea scamp or super star model? There's a thread with brochures in the starcraft forum for 1970 if you want to identify it:)

Make sure the varnish has UV inhibitors in it. Sun exposure is the most severe on wooden seats.

The trimmed 2X12 seems like overkill to me. Don't the floatation "boxes" screw to the bottom of the wood seat planks? If so, that stiff box structure will minimize any sagging of the seats.

My Jet has 1X14 seat planks and in the original outfitting it had 2 angle brackets at the fore and aft edge undersides to reduce springing. Seemed to work for that model.

i agree with the over kill on the 2x. id think 1x or even a 5/4 board would work just fine.

the floatation boxes are under the seat . i have 2 rusted out boxes on the front & midile seat and the foam but none on the rear seat just the strip it attached to and no foam.i will have to make 2 boxes for the front seat and midile seat. trying to figure the material i will use to make them.t

You may want to stay with the Oak vs. Poplar.. Poplar is classified as a hard wood but it's pretty soft.

White oak weathers better than any of the woods mentioned in this thread.
