3.0 liter Camshaft Gear doesn't have Timing Mark!

I'm replacing my 1992 115 HP 3.0L Mercruiser block due to water freeze damage. I hastily pulled out the camshaft out of the old block before checking for a timing mark on the fiber camshaft timing gear. I never saw one without any mark like this factory installed one.
Now I'm installing it in my new block and I think I have it right. How can I be sure? When the crankshaft gear mark is lined up in the best fitting camshaft teeth, the mounting holes for the camshaft is exactly centered.
Seems right, any ideas?
Thanks, Herb

If you don't have a mark on the cam gear, replace it. Having some holes centered is not mentioned in any manual as a way to set the crank and cam gear timing.

You are putting used parts into a new block? Are you using new camshaft bearings? they cannot be removed and re installed.
You are talking about a 17 year old motor. What you should be doing is a rebuild. That includs new cam, lifters, everything. This is a no brainer, Herb.
Build a new motor, not a rattle trap.
