I have a '82 evinrude that just plain won't go. I switched out the plugs, got new gas, cleaned out the tank, and did everything I could think of but it just does not want to fire. Anyone out there have any thoughts? what are the starting procedures for an evinrude? I have never had a motor before and got it with a boat that I purchased. They said that it froze up on them on the water while running it hard. I took off the cover and hand cranked the flywheel over and it was free again. The plugs were fouled so I replaced them, and the gas left in the tank was nothing but sludge so I cleaned it out and got fresh high test gas. It pulls easy but just does not seem like it is getting gas to the spark but it is flowing free to there. I did take the filter off and rinsed out the grit and crud that was in the screen mesh.

Unfortunaly, I cannot find a descent repair guy around here other than at the marina but they more or less change parts, they don't diagnose which gets costly in the long run. I don't mind paying to get it fixed but I can guess what the problem is with the best of them so why pay for that.......

If anyone has any thoughts or knows of someone in the area EDIT. I am near meadville pa which is 30 min south of erie. near pymatuning lake and conneaut lake. Thanks for listening.

Take care,

Jacob

Jacob, go to the Engine FAQs Forum and do "Outboard won't start". Let us know what you find.

Check the compression first then clean the carbs.

I believe I may have found the problem.......... see attached photo with the large hole in the side of my carb....... anyone know where I could get a used carb for a 9.9 evinrude E10RCNS? even the top would do the bowl, float, jet and such all looked good. The previous owner said that he was "running it hard" and it just cut out..... I can kinda see why. This is proably not the only thing wrong with it but it is something I can fix so I am happy!

JBWELD and some thin tin over that hole should fix it up, question is, did you get the piece out that got sucked into the intake???

Yeah, actually the pieces were all there until I touched them then they fell apart.... I don't think anything actually went in. In the pic you can see the piece that came out. I like the JB weld idea, anyone else think it will work. I was looking into carbs and nearly shat.......

Thanks,

Jacob

Ya the new one's aren't cheap, a used one can be had for 40-60 bucks then a kit is 20.

JBWELD will work, just make sure the surface is clean. I saw a pic on the sschapter 9.9 leeroy's ramblings where he used it to fix the waterpump surface in a lower unit, it works on almost anything metal.
