1970-1972 Johnson OB with no fire

We recently purchased a boat with a Johnson OB. Not sure of the year but reading other posts, I am guessing 70 or 71. It will turn over but will not fire. We put new plugs in it but they are not getting any fire at all. We took off the flywheel and cleaned the points and contacts, still no fire.

Any thoughts on what it could be? A little idea about the motor: it has an amplifier and one coil. On top of the motor cover, it says "loop charged". Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks,

Wayne

If it's a 70 - 72 motor, it's not "loop charged". Post the model number and we can help you more.

Thanks for your replies. I certainly don't want to waste anyone's time and if I had the shop manual, I probably would be in a world of better knowledge-shape than I'm in. Obviously, we bought the boat used so we have no prior knowledge of the motor or boat. However, I did find the model to the motor and it is 60ESL-71C.

I appreciate your thoughts on what the problem(s) may be.

Wayne, that's part of my signature and a suggestion not directed at anyone in particular. It's way easier to fix these machines with the right info, that's all.

You may find a manual in a public library. You'll be really way ahead with a book. Ebay sometimes has manuals at low cost.

Not a problem, I picked that up in searching through other posts. :D I also figured out through other posts that my motor most likely is a 71 with the model # being 60ESL 71C. I will definitely try to find a manual; however, a few questions:

1) do you have any ideas on why it isn't getting any fire to the plugs?
2) any idea on how to find out the HP of the motor?

Any suggestions would be helpful until I can track down a manual. Thanks!

Wayne.

From the model, I would say it's a '71 60 HP

Okay, thanks for the info on the manual. Until I can get one in my hands, do you have ANY ideas on what I can do to find out why the plugs are not getting any fire?

If memory serves me right, the ignition system on your motor may be an odd ball one that OMC only used for a few model years and I don't have personal experience with it. Maybe F_R or someone else can be helpful here.
