I have replaced the shift and universal joint bellows on my alpha one outdrive and have reinstalled the drive about 100 times now with the same problem: it will not shift into reverse or get out of forward . now even though the shift control moves into neutral the prop still doesn't spinning freely and it ratchets in the clockwise direction. I hope this is useful enough description for someone to supply me with any helpful suggestions on how to properly get this drive back on and the gears shifting again because the baot worked fine before i took the drive off.. Thanks for any and all suggestion -sean

When you took the drive off and put it back on, did you have the shifter in forward, and the drive in forward when installing????
If not, you probably bent the lower shift shaft.

i dont understand your explaination of events.with the shifter in forward and the shift shoe in the bell housing pointing straight back, put the roller in the cable guide[probably wrong word for it].turn the shift lever on the lower unit forward and hold it there by keeping pressure on the prop in a ccw direction.lift the drive up and have a assistant put the driveshaft in the gimbal bearing.lift it to the bell hgousing being careful not to disturb the shift roller.make sure the shift shoe and shift lever meet together.jiggle and push.if its aligned to the motor properly it will slip rite on.the last inch may go a little hard cause of o rings but try turningthe prop ccw as u go to help align the shaft with the coupler.

Goop up the shift roller with grease to keep it in place when re-installing the drive. Also everything MUST be in forward gear.

If the shift foot (outdrive part) got pulled up and turned you will not have proper shifting.

with the drive leaning forward (like it trimmed up) dogs will fall in to forward then make sure by ccw pressure on the prop and pull up and re align the shift boot to straight forward. Also make sure the slot in the shaft (boat part) is straight forward.

good luck.
