I am in need for a lower unit for a 40 hp evinrude or does anyone know what other type will bolt up to it. It is a 1985. I pulled the lower unit off and started with the water pump and found that the upper roller bearings was destroyed. There does not seem to be any other problem with the lower unit but I dont want to take a chance on it. Any help out there PLZ PLZ PLZ.

Thanks,
Jerry.....

I guess what TD is saying why " throw the baby out with the bath water" ? A bad bearing doesn't mean the whole lower unit is bad.

Re: Please HELP>>>Dire Need for a Lower unit

I bought a very old boat, its a Terry 15' 1972 aprox. it came with the 1985 Evinrude 40 hp. The thing started on the third pull. It runs like a charm but I was afraid of putting it into gear so i Started to take the lower end off after checking the gear oil and found small fragments of metal shavings in it. It is an elect start but I wanted to see it run. I am going to try to restore the whole boat and motor and the trailer. I will try to put some pic. of the progress at a later date.

Re: Please HELP>>>Dire Need for a Lower unit

hey Jerome, it sounds like you're dealing with the same thing as me. My lower unit was getting water, so I broke it down and got to the thrust bearing housing under my water pump because I suspected the seals there were the culprits. When I got it out the bearing rollers fell out. I found a shop that deals with old boat motors. They ordered a new thrust bearing and they're going to replace the seals and the bearing in the housing for me for $10 bucks labor.

So maybe call around and see if there are shops in the area that deal in older motors. I could have ordered that bearing online and put it in myself but for $10 bucks labor why do it yourself.

And as for puling your bearing housing, I don't know how similar your motor is to mine, but I was having a hard time getting my bearing housing out, so I hooked up a screw-in lu oil connector to a bicycle foot pump and pumped air in till the bearing housing popped out. Works great if your driveshaft seals aren't too bad.
