Merc 40 Classic 1990 Oil in water intake

Hi All,
I have just dicovered oil driping from the water intake. What has happened and what do I need to fix it.

Most likely cause of that is a set of bad driveshaft seals. Pull the lower unit, remove both upper and lower pump bodies and inspect the seals pressed into the lower pump body.

I expect you'll find they're worn out with hardly any tension on the driveshaft. And you'll find a lot of milky oil in the area.
