I am wanting to add a tell tale to my 71 Johnson 60hp. I would prefer to not drill into the head. I saw a plug with a slotted head on the top of the head. Can I remove this plug and add a fitting for a tell tale?
I sort of remember that plug. I sort of think it will work. Remove it and see if water squirts out. If it does, go for it. Use a restrictor to reduce the flow down to about 3/32" so you don't bleed off too much coolant.
Wonder if that was there from the factory or if someone drilled it later.
If I were to put a set of ears on the motor and run water, would it flow through the block or does the motor need to be running? That would be an easy way to confirm if water flows through that area of the block.
That is the first screwdriver slotted NPT plug I've ever seen, is it actually shown as a flat blade plug in the parts sheet your getting the numbers from?
No, not yet. Still working on the no spark issue. New points shipped today. Once I have the motor running I'll do the tell tale mod. I'll be sure to come back and let everyone know how it turned out.
Keep an eye on ebay. I got my amp. off there for $50 (NEW) and had to do some modifications to the wiring but it is a way cheaper alternative. I will get the number of mine for you tomorrow!
