hmm....

Take flywheel off and check the inside of the flywheel for a "rust ring". If it has it clean it. The stator ( at least on mine) is located right above the distributor when you take the flywheel off. Ensure that the stator contacts that arc on the inside of the flywheel are clean and shiny as well. Mine had two wires going to it. A yellow and a Yellow and gray. Although mine is a different year (1970) and a different HP (60) I would think that the dynamics of it should be similiar, If I am in error I apologize. Here is a close up of what my stator looked like.

You can see the distributor right below it ( or at least the plug wires going into it) You can separate it from the distributoe by taking the 3 phillips head screws out. (You can seee one on the top partially removed)

Hope this helps

Here was my orginical post where members helped me troubleshoot whether it was the amplifier, coil, stator..etc.. and how to check

could be power pack. test here several pages > http://www.boatpartstore.com/page28.asp

1973 65hp does not have a distributor cap below the stator, but that is the general idea of where it is and what it looks like. It doesn't "arc" to the flywheel. There are magnets in the flywheel that pass by the pole pieces on the stator, and when they do, a magnetic field passes through the coils of wire. That is how electricity is generated, whether it be an outboard or the dynamos at Niagra Falls.

Don't assume it is bad on somebody's say so. It can be tested. There are other things that could have caused it to quit.

Thanks for the clarification, I didn't know exactly how to explain it, so I misexplained it hastily. I just assumed that when I had the "rust ring" on the inner ring of the flywheel that it wasn't making a good "connection"
