Today i was workin on my boat, a 1977 sea ray with a chevy merc 305..... i have always wanted to try thru hull exhaust, i know a majority of people will tell me not to do it, but i see a ton of guys where i go who have it and i like it....
my question is could i just connect the two hoses that go to the manifolds together and run the exhaust just straight thru? i know the right way is to block it off at the y pipe, but if it gets old or i dont like it thats a lot of work....
so i was thinkin if i got like a stainless steel pipe that i could connect the two hoses together and then just run my exhaust straight thru right out the back.... then its always an easy reversal if i change my mind.....

would that work?

By the way, if the Y-pipe gets "old" and maybe starts leaking you'd need to pull the engine to remove it and block off the transom.

I did that on both my old SeaRays, the 305/228hp I just ran both 3" hoses right out the back to tips, on the 350/260hp I ran 3" Salisbury rubber marine mufflers from the risers to the tips. Be careful you don't run into your power steering assembly at the transom. By the way the Salisbury rubber marine mufflers are discontinued :( I never did anything with the Y-pipe. Also, both boats thru-hulls weren't that loud.

doing this is not a bad thing - I like the way the quick and qiuiet set-ups sound and was quite discouraged when I found that I couldn't use the one that I put together (ran into power steering set-up and tight fit in general and then found needed to go longer with risers to prevent reversion....). The chance of the y-pipe leaking are probably about the same as they are now...

Oops! I forgot, one of my boats I needed to get 3" extension risers, to get past the power steering assembly, I think it might have been my 20' SeaRay with the 305 because it was not a very deep boat.

For all your thourgh the Hull exhaust needs..On a budget..;)

There's your muffler's

http://motors.shop.ebay.com/__?_from=R40&_trksid=p284.m38.l1313&_nkw=marine+exhaust+mufflers&_sacat=

Now just cut some 4" or the nessecary hole's in you transom and boom you done...Just a few notes...take as straight as path as possible bends will or can create hot spot's....When cutting into you hull tape the entrance and exit points ...that will prevent delamination and a very thin sharp blade..

Opps and of course the shiny stuff..;)

Now the big part is getting the courage to go forward....:D

Courage, True TG! ;)

Just a note here on my older 1978 SeaRays, (similar to the op's 1977 SeaRay) they were both original stock 3" diameter center risers, I don't know what year they changed, but the newer engines all use 4" risers.

Re: thru hull exhaust

thanks for all the input.... im looking forward to do this, my father is on vacation for a few weeks and i'd like to try n have it done by the time he comes home, hes always telln me how good the through hull sounds :)

im gunna get a picture of my engine compartment and post it, i dont know if i have a power steering? plus the manifolds were changed out, theyre no longer the log style one.... im fairly mechanical with cars and stuff, boats are a little new so i just make sure of myself before i start taking things apart

Re: thru hull exhaust

You probably need to have a Mercury manual.

You can download it here from the "Adults Only" sticky above in the main forum message list

Re: thru hull exhaust

heres the back of the manifold it looks like a 3'' then to a 4'' so i can just cap the y pipe and go straight back out the hull? or should i connect the two ends of the y pipe together? they seem to already have elbows on them.... it seems like i can go straight through the hull.... there is a bar that goes across but i should be about 2'' or so above that..... so all i assume i need is the pipes that go through the hull and some caps to close off the y pipe? is it that simple?

heres a pic of the whole engine..... im not sure what tipe of manifolds are on it, but theyre different from the ones in the manual i downloaded yesterday ;)

Re: thru hull exhaust

I actually have the corsa quick and quiet set-up I was thinking about using in the garage with the "tunable" corsa mufflers that bolt to the transom, soft hose and all. Was just no way to make it work with my tight fit and the power steering assembly in the way. I wun dup running elbows, mufflers in the middle and 4" pipe out the back. It's loud even with mufflers... Send me a pm if you want a piucture of them.

Re: thru hull exhaust

I did this to my 260HP 5.7L Merc and it sounds great. Almost straight out the back. We angled the hoses down a little, but the pipes are well above the waterline. They have internal flappers just to add some extra protection. I went to Home Depot and bought a couple 4" pipe ends and simply strapped them on to the ends of the exhaust Y-Pipe and they've worked perfectly. Real cheap too!
