I bought a 1964 Evinrude at an auction. Boat last registered in 1993...so has not been run in 15 yrs according to previous owner, but supposedly ran.

Engine turns over...no spark at plugs(was not able to see spark jump after removing all 4 spark plugs and turning engine over and resting plug against head)

I do intend to buy a repair manual for this motor...but was wondering if someone could help me troubleshoot the issue....don't know where to begin. Would love to see this old woodie run....needs lots of work but not going to begin refinishing the mahagony hull,etc...if motor is shot. Any suggestions?

josephpauldine@yahoo.com is my email address. By the way, I live near Syracuse, NY....

Joe-
Ah these old magneto engines are so sweet to work on. I loved it when they were so simple! Pop the flywheel and plunk in a (couple) new sets of points. The trick here is use an ohm meter to set the opposing set. Set one at 0.20 then hook up your ohm meter. Just as the points on set one open make a mark on the crank and housing. EXACTLY 180 from that point set the other set of points to open at that exact point. That's it!

Now with good coils, condenser changes, plug wires that don't have cracks in them and a new set of properly gapped spark plugs you'll have a good runner. Yes, do get a manual.

Joe- I 've screwed up on two accounts! BEFORE you begin any repairs; check the compression and the lower unit. If they are no good you need not waste any more money.
Secondly, you have a 60 HP not a 6 HP. I misread your post. The distributor on the back of the motor has a set of points. Set that at 0.20 and check carefully for a defective coil. There are witness marks on the distributor and the flywheel housing. Align those then slip the cogged rubber belt on.

Sorry for the screw up!!!

Joe, If that is a magneto engine, the plug wires will come out the bottom of the dissy cap. A battery-coil ignition has the wires coming out the sides of the dissy cap, and the ign coil in the cowling.

The distributor will contain two sets of points, one condenser and a single coil. Clean and gap the two sets of points to .020. They need to be set 90* apart. Look for the timing marks on the dissy pulley base, flywheel and block. Align them and set first set of points. Now rotate flywheel 90* and hole will line up over second set of points. Look for timing mark and set these to .020. If still no spark, remove coil from base of dissy(Magneto) or back of cowling, and test for contunity and look for cracks. Replace if necessary. Replace condenser for good measure.
