Hello - So I've finally gotten around to cleaning the carburetor on my 1957 10hp Seahorse - I've had the carb kit for almost 2 years. I removed the carb/silencer/faceplate assembly, but I cant get the slow speed adjustment knob off. The high speed and choke knob came off without any problems, but this one (red arrow in the picture) is fighting me.

I have penetrating oil doing it's job on it now, but just wanted to be sure I'm not missing something. Is there a better way to get this knob off? Thanks.

You should be able to screw the needle all the way out and put it in a cup of penetrating oil and let it sit, while you overhaul the card. If it doesn't come apart after that, then I would try heating it up with a blowtorch. I wouldn't use any flame hotter than that though.

I'm only able to turn the knob 180* one time. There's a stop on the faceplate that prevents me from being able to turn it any further.

You should be able to push in the face plate enough to get around the stop.

Thanks cc67, worked like a charm. The carb is now disassembled and soaking in Seafoam. Thanks again

I have a 58 10hp, they are good motors. Mine will get me and my brother in law on plane in my 14' v-bottom without problem.

Whoa! COOL Paintjob:D I'm considering doing a cosmetic restoration on my '57 next winter.

Looks like you have a couple other classics there too. Do all of them run?

Yea they all run. Yours should look more like this 18hp. JB, got a kid here in town who wants to sell me his 58 Evinrude 5.5. I'll post some pics if the deal goes through.

Yep, that's what it looks like! Sort of like the color inverse of your '58.:)
Right now I'm working on refurbishing one of my pressure tanks (minus the paint for now).

Here's a trick for you to help loosen the needle valve knob. Set the shaft in a vice - no teeth, has to be a smooth jaw or wood block jaw. Use a socket just larger than the diameter of the shaft and tap the knob down the shaft. Once past the spread area where the screw is, it should become loose enough to pull off the pointy end. Then you can remove the screw, clean the threads, etc. Just take care not to clamp down on the shaft threads with the vice...
