Throttle Cable Adjustment- Update

I just put the boat in the water this past w/e.
All is well...........

Tonight I just wanted to check the timing.........set between 8-10*.

I then checked the throttle plates at WOT (with the engine off obviously)....I found there was more room for the plates to travel!!!!......maybe ~10* more!

So.............I proceeded to adjust the cable by turning the barrel to open the carb plates fully when the throttle was at WOT............but, then my idle was too high and the adjustment screw was all the way out.

It's an Edelbrock 1409 carb............any suggestions? I looked in the manual but didn't find anything.

Not looking to run at WOT but would like to know what it actually is........right now it's at 4500RPM...........if it went to 5000 I could run a different prop and get more speed at mid-range.

Re: Throttle Cable Adjustment

If the cable won't adjust properly to keep a little slack in the cable when the carb is at idle (as to not put any tension on the throttle plates) and also hold the throttle plates at 90 degrees to the venturi when the hammer is down, then the cable is stretched and needs to be replaced.

Re: Throttle Cable Adjustment

Ayuh,... Another thought,...
I believe some Controls are adjustable for length of throw for the cables...
I've seen old Morse controller that were anyways...

Re: Throttle Cable Adjustment

There are also different holes in the carb linkage. If I remember correctly you changed carbs didn't you? The cables can't stretch that far.

You'll see extra cable mounting Holes, probably further away from the pivot point....;)
Look at the Backside, or Bottom, depending on what you've got...

Re: Throttle Cable Adjustment

Check the controller first, I'm pretty sure Mercruiser uses the most outside holes for most throw. in the controller.
The carb may have several different holes in the linkage, not sure how yours is set up. Can you post a picture of the linkage where the cable hooks on the carb?

Re: Throttle Cable Adjustment

Adjusting the cable won't give you more cable travel. You already figured that out.

I have a PDF of a Morse controller installation manual. I think I might have downloaded it from the Teleflex-Marine website. I can email it to you if you need a picture to understand the different locations for hooking up the cable. The manual has about 4 different recommendations based on what engine the throttle is getting hooked up to. Just make sure you play with the throttle cable and not the shift cable.

At the throttle controller, the farther the cable mount point is from the pivot point, the more cable movement and therefore actual throttle movement at the carb.

At the carb, the closer you mount the cable to the pivot point, the more throttle movement you will get for a given amount of cable movement.

Re: Throttle Cable Adjustment

I emailed you the manual.

Attached is one of the pictures from it. I think it will help you or others to visualize the mounting points and how it changes the throw of the cable.

Thanks Ken.......I just finished editing stating that I found the manual online w/ your help.

Thanks again...........going to check it out tonight. Hope it's not too difficult to access the under side of the controller.........:)

Do you have a Morse control Tony? Mercruiser controls are different.

Re: Throttle Cable Adjustment

not sure what type of controls I have, looks similar to the pic......

I looked at it tonight and after reading the manual it seemed like it might be possible the handle was hitting the console, so I repositioned the handle a bit towards reverse.......now it doesn't bottom-out on the console and the throttle plates open fully!!!!!!

Will try it tomorrow night............

Wonder how high my WOT will go.........had to be ~10* more opening.

Re: Throttle Cable Adjustment- Update

Checked WOT today after the cable adjustment..........

Disappointing........only picked up 100RPM...........WOT at 4600.......37MPH.

I changed props this year from a 4 blade 16" pitch to a 3 blade 17" pitch......I like this one better.............

I love the SBC scream at WOT!!!!!
