Capitalism will eliminate communism. Plus they have cigar, vintage cars and beautiful beaches. They are so close, they should be our friends not our enemies.

Perhaps no one here likes terrific Jazz music, also how about hooking up with bones, permit, tarpon and snook on the fly.;)

Or for me..Jazz..and Tuna, Dorado, marlin & sails! The Old Man and the Sea stuff!

"If only the boy was here, if only the boy was here" the old man thought to himself. "If the boy was here I may loosen my hold of this line, drink a bit of water, If only the boy was here"

We plan to visit Cuba next winter. If anyone has any tips I would be grateful. The closest I have been is the Cayman Islands where I enjoyed some Cuban Rum (don't smoke). I tried to vist Cuba while I was at Grand Cayman but it didn't work out.

jay-
I think you can spend money if you get local press credentials.

That is true and I've thought about trying to travel to Cuba as a photojournalist, but it is apparently not all that easy if you are not either on assignment with real press credentials, or a well known freelance journalist.

I do quite a bit of photography and most of my work is self produced, but I have also been published by others. The problem is that I remain semi-professional as a photographer, at best. It is not my primary income source, nor do I do it full time. All of this being the case, I'll probably have to wait until travel restriction are relaxed for the average person.

You can bet, however, that if I get to go any time soon, I'll have my Nikons with me!

Capitalism doesn't magically stamp out communism. Free people when given a free choice most often choose a democracy or republic model for their political system, and capitalism is an intriinsic part of that. But profit-making potential can create its own oppression.

Don't get me wrong, I am as Yankee independant and American as can be. But I choose- the best I can- where and who with to spend any money here in the USA: so for me personally, until human oppression is proactively being eliminated in Cuba, it can remain an island to itself.

There are many despicable regimes around the globe that are many times more atrocious than Cuba, yet we are more than happy to prop them up against the wishes of their citizens with OUR tax dollars, it has been that way for a few generations.

The trade and travel embargo against Cuba was and is probably the most nonsensical foreign policy fiasco, it did nothing but hurt the average Cuban citizen and prolonged the dictatorship.

The Politics of smoke and mirrors lives on, thanks to the gullible.

One of the big drawbacks of Cuba's opening up would be how the diversion of tourist dollars may or will affect the economies the other Caribbean islands.
It is my understanding that there have already been some grumblings of displeasure within a few of the other Islands business communities.

I have many friends that have been to Cuba. They say the resorts are great but the food is not as good as the other islands. We have been to the Dominican many many times and the Cuban cigars there we have found to be mostly fake. We have just come back from Jamaica and fell in love with the place. The resorts was amazing, the food was great and the Cuban cigars were real. Paradise found !!!!

The resorts are not my cup of tea, i like to see which ever island i go to, meet with the locals and try as many culinary delights at least once, in other words get a good feel of the place.

I visited Jamaica twice, the very first time i stayed at a resort (Breezes in Ocho Rios) and had a great time.
My second visit was absolutely terrific, i got to see the real Jamaica, the trip into the Blue Mountains was marvelous, Port Royal where piracy once flourished was interesting.
The crime rate in Jamaica is very high, therefore it is generally advised to be in the company of a competent and experienced guide.

What disturbed me the most was the rate of illiteracy and the amount of poverty which i encountered in such a beautiful place.

Cuba has been on my list for quite sometime, i had the opportunity almost two years ago to go bareboating to Cuba with some friends from Tortola, but opted for Sidney OZ instead since the missus and i were about to celebrate our 20th anniversary at the time and the dates clashed.
Not this year but perhaps next year.

I have Cuban friends and relatives and they still have mixed emotions about being able to go back for visit. I would definitely go if given the chance.

We did 2 trips away from the resort while we were there. Went to Mayfield falls, lunch at a Jamaican restaurant about 8 miles outside negril, drove through the mountains, a few hours at the negril beach and town, up the lighthouse at the west point and Rick's Cafe for sunset. That was enough for us for this trip. The rest was R&R at the resort.

Re: Would you vacation in Cuba?

The only reason I'd want to go is to experience first hand a repressive dictatorship, same as N Korea without a bomb...or have they got one?

I drove around the FSU with a former KGB offical, just a coincidence, without proper internal permits , I find people are just people no matter what.
People who imagined themselves having power wanted bribes, the old lady in a mkt stall wouldn't take my money for coffee when she learned I was Amerikanski. That happened a lot.

Anyway on principle I couldn't want to visit cuba for pleasure.

I don't know where some of you folks go to get brainwashed, i'm just happy not to drink from the same well.
Comparing Cuba to North Korea, Iran, or even China is disingenuous to say the least.

Disingenuous is an inaccurate word for something that is to some degree subjective. Maybe Cuba hasn't massacred hundreds of its citizens recently to maintain "control" like China has, but it is still a repressive government. But then again, maybe from your perspective there is a tolerable level of basic human rights violations. When a country denies freedom of speech, pursuit of happiness, religious freedom, freedom of self direction as happens in Cuba and China I find that basically intolerable. That is the well I drink from.
