Hello All,
I am needing some help on this one.
I have a 1975 85h johnson v4. It ran great on my last boat, then I pulled the engine and mounted it onto a new boat, after rigging, I start the engine in high idle and it starts and runs fine, as soon as I shift it back to the neutral/idle position it chokes/sputters for about 3-5 secs then dies. It starts in the high idle position all day long it only cuts off when shifted into neutral.
All cylinders have spark and the compression is good on all cylinders.
Please help!!!

idle speed stop screw, set too low, throttle cable misadjusted, dirty low speed jets. take you choice for the first bet.

Thanks for your help. Here's an update. I started it up on the hose and it starts, idles fine, neutral, forward, reverse, its fine. Only when its in the water does it die in neutral. Any advice???

On the hose there is no back pressure. You should set the idle at 800 rpm in gear in the water. That will probably be around 1200 rpm on the hose in neutral.
