Hi, I bought a 87 SPL 28hp and have a problem I can't figure out. The motor starts and runs great from idle to about 1/2 throttle. If I try to to go over 1/2throttle it will stall. If I back off it will run fine again. If I don't back off and it stalls it will start back up as long as I back off to idle. I tried pumping the bulb when it wants to stall but it doesn't help. There's a good stream of water coming from the tell tail hole and the motor doesn't feel hot to touch. It is an electric start, with remote control. Thanks for any help you can give me. I'm getting tired of only going at 1/2 speed.

My question to you is when is the last time you cleaned the carbs on her and #2 when was the last time the water pump impeller been changed on her? How old is the fuel in the tank? Did you put it away and put fuel stabilizer in her at the end of the winter? Just curious? And if you didn't do those things please get those done so that outboard will last you for a long time. Take care, Bob:)

Also, if the fuel is fresh I would definitely clean the carb out on her because the high speed jet is probably gummed up on her.

Hi Bob, I just bought this motor and I'm trying to get it running right. I needed some direction of what to try. I bought a repair manuel, carb rebuilt kit and a water punp kit. I'll be installing them shortly. Thanks a lot for all of the info. Hopefully this will solve the problem.

Hi, I rebuilt the carb but I have a question. The small diameter brass tube which runs from the low speed jet down to the bottom of the carb, is inside a larger diameter brass tube with 4 holes in it. The small brass inner tube is not centered inside the larger outer tube, and is against the side of the large tube. Is this correct or should it be centered and not touching the outer tube? I want to make sure it's ok before I put it back on the motor. Thanks again for the info.
