Hell all,

this motor has been sitting and I finally decided to run it . It turns out I have no spark to my plugs at all. I started by replacing the plugs and checked the coils and they are fine. I also had some wiring done because they were very dryrotted. I am at a stand still for now. Would I check the points next ? If so how can I do that? Thanks

Both the condensers and coils should be checked and the points cleaned or better replaced

Thanks for the help Laddies, coils tested good and they have been swapped , I cant find the condenser I know what it looks like but its not there at all. Only things I have under my fly wheel is a pair of points and the stator! Shouldnt that condenser be under there? My model # is 2688508

For the system to work you need condensers the Mercury part number is 398-2203, Phelon is FG-6453 and Sierra is 18-5212

I went ahead and ordered the condenser, However since there wasnt one on there Im not sure what to attach it to. Also I opened up another mercury today its a 1971 merc 40 . It just has one point but yet no condenser. So I am assuming that whoever worked on these tossed them. But when I dug up a parts manual it didnt list a condenser at all for this model. Any help clarifying that up would be great ,,,Thanks again in advance

Ohh the model number on the 40 is 3168012.

That engine is CD ign and the capacitor (condenser) is built into the stator

I see, so if the condenser is bad then the stator has to be replaced? Any way to test it? Thanks

This is the test for that stator when it's used on a 2 cyl engine but the tests are the same.

I was digging some more and found the Mercury test for that system with OHM specs.

Thanks for the help .. and Pics, I got great spark to the plug on the 4hp model. I did mange a lttle combustion when I squirted some fuel into the cylinder but thats about it . I pulled the carb and Its super clean and not plugged up. Any suggestions would be great ,,Thanks again

Did you clean the low speed pickup tube when checking the carb?

Does the carb seem to pull vacume when cranking?

No, that seems to be the problem

It probably has a reed valve out

Thanks, One reed pedal was broke off looks like there was damage to the piston as well. Thanks for all your help. I'll let you know how it goes when I get the parts.
