Re: 19?? Evinrude 35 HP?

Well Today is the day I get to take it on a test spin. I bought a battery at a battery place hooked it up and the starter spun the motor a little bit and then it sounded like the motor binded well I started to think O CRAP but then I said ok clean the terminals and check the charge on the battery. Battery volts were low probably because it set on the shelf for awhile(I bought used) So I charged it up and BROOOM the motor is alive Hahaha.

i'll let u guys know how the test spin went later on.

i've had that problem with the past two test runs.. if you dont have it fully charged it will just barely turn over..

then i went and got the batt charger and putit on it in the boat.. and turnd it over one time and it stayed charged..

when you take pictures post one where i marked the red arrow. it may be just a shadow. part of the mounting bracket. clik on pic to enlarge.

Good eye, TD. Even though it turned out to be nothing, that could have been a major issue for the OP.

also that long connecting rod is totally wrong. i would actually recomended getting one of these , the make it so much simpler. this mounts directly under your motor on the transom, the cable goes thru it, and you use the long adapter arm to steer the motor. this one is set up for left hand steering, right hand the cable just comes from the other side.
get rid of all that flexing crap.

I see that u said the long rod is wrong which one. The one that connects to the motor or?

Also as you can see on my cable has a sliding tube of some short on that. The bracket u suggested seems like i'd have to take that tube off of mine? And I was wondering how do I? I tried twisting but that didnt work

So is the steering arm that goes from motor to cable wrong? Or was it some thing else? Thanks

No I havnt yet :(. Its 5:30 am and I got the day off so I figured i'd get it taken care of today if I could. I'll get some photos of the front as soon asit gets daylight. The Rod/arm that goes from the motor down to the cable is what I belive u said is wrong for one. And after looking at it I think so aswell. I think its to short or some thing.

I been searching for a evinrude steering link/arm and couldnt find one. I am thinking of making one out of 3/8's steel rod. Any way any ideas would be great

Thanks.

Re: 19?? Evinrude 35 HP?

Getting me frustrated I'll be uploading pics. No matter what I do it just dont turn all the way on one of the sides. I can pull the pivot back then it takes from one way move it foward does the same thing.

Pretty confusing for me.

Re: 19?? Evinrude 35 HP?

Pm returned.

Steering issue will be fixed. Sounds like those set ups every ones using is the way to go so i'll join in aswell. The only other issue my motor/boat is having is. I think the motor is running to rich. I fouled the plugs up today on a test drive it wouldnt start I got home and looked at the plugs and they are all black and they have some oil goo on them. I replaced plugs and the motor fired right up. I let it run for about 5 minutes pulled plugs and same thing.

Not upset or any thing I only 400 for the boat and motor and it seems like a solid project. I am going to go read about the carb in the other section wish me luck.

Re: 19?? Evinrude 35 HP?

did you check the coils to see if you have a good hot spark? a motor will run with less than a hot spark, but will foul the plugs. check with a spark tester not just looking at how they will fire the plugs. It needs a good hot blue spark. A weak spark will fail under compression.

GUYS we are starting to get confused as to who's motor we are working on. i really suggest the the 2 of you start a new thead each, and reference a link to this thread as part of the history of the motors.

Re: 19?? Evinrude 35 HP?

you can do it, but the neighbors may not like the smoke.

i like this method.
Decarb, take a can of seafoam put 3/4 of it in the gas tank, with only 1 gallon of premixed gas. put the rest in a spray bottle. start the engine, and let it come up to temperature. then remove plugs, and them some real good shot of seafoam into the cylinders, replace plugs, let sit 15 minutes. restart, and spray the rest of the seafoam into the carbs, so the the motor almost stalls, wait and repeat until the seafoam is gone.then take for a wide open spin. then put in new plugs, ad premixed gas to the tank, and take it for a wide open throttle spin. it is going to smoke like a house on fire, during this process.

afterwards compression.recheck

will this take the place of doing a full carb rebuild?

if so i may get some seafoam today and try it out
