I have a 1968 14' almunacraft boat and am in the process of restoring it. the back transom is completely rotten and i figured, no big deal, i'll just remove all the nuts/bolts/screws and be able to remove the board....i was wrong. i'm assuming i need to drill the rivets by the back handles in order to remove the aluminum bar in the back, is this correct? as far as replacing the rivets, should i just use stainless stop nuts/bolts? i'm going to replace the board and add tompson water seal as well as a compressed hardwood to prevent the motor mounts from "breaking the wood seal" in the future. i also am looking to replace the side decals, "ALUMNA" is in block lettering, and "craft" is in cursive, i have checked out ebay with no results. please post some links to threads if possible, i searched and havent found much useful. i live in wisconisn if that helps letting me know where to find a place for the decals....Thanks!

I would not use thompsons water seal on the wood you are going to be replacing. Do a search for transom here at the forum and you will be reading for hours. Like was said we can help you better if there is pics of what you are talking about. I did a transom on a 14' DMI boat. I did not get pics of the process but the wood did not go all the way to the drain hole but was a challenge to get all of the wood out. I bought a re-chargeable chain saw and just kinda went at it like that from the top. My transom was 1 inch thick i used 2 pieces of 1/2 ply to replace it. Also what is the MAX motor compacity on your data plate? That will help us tell you how thick your new transom needs to be. Mine was only 15hp max so that 1 inch was enough but some boats might be more like 25 or even 40 hp.
