hey guys i climbed up under my fiberglass bass boat filling the the small chips with some glass and discovered a big spot maybe 18 inchs wide by 22inches gashed out i poured water down in the hull and doesnt leak thru so i m wondering should i tear the floor out to see if there is any damage to the rails or will sheeting the area real good be all ineed to do. i took a tool and tapped on the spot and it didnt sound hollow or anything again its not clear through just into the glass .

Re: hull damage

i think as you get further into you project, you are going to end up separating the cap and hull anyway. then you can see whats there.

Re: hull damage

18 x 22 is a big mark. Do you remember hitting anything hard? Could be even though water does not leak out, the resin is fractured and therefore weak. Water will probably seep into the glass over time.

What is the overall condition of the boat? Is it worth tearing into and repairing, or is it better to replace the boat?

Resolve the picture issue and get a picture of that damage.

no i just puchased this boat and began to restore it and i climbed up under and discovered this area apparently it was a cover up attempt that i didnt see at the time so shame on me for not looking closer. however the boat sat in a field for 9 years and was full of dirt and est. all the boxes was full of dirt and sand so i dont know now if this was sunk or not.ill get some pics of the damage and get them on here soon hopefully you guys can help figure this out. i really think this boat has some potential hopfully.

From the sound of it.... I would anticipate a cap removal.

Re: hull damage

well i took the floor out above the damage on the hull took out tthe foam which was water logged and foud no damage to the rails and no cracks in the glass so that is the good news. so i going to put a layer of glass on the inside and then put 2 layers on the bottom sand and prime then paint. does it sound like im am missing anything ? wher can i get new foam foam for this thing hopefully its not too expensive just got layed off.turns out the area is only thin in about a 6inch space instead of the 18 by 22 .from under i can see light shining through the glass

Re: hull damage

9 years in a field with soaked foam is probably more than just a patch job on the damage to the hull. I could be wrong but the entire stringer system and all of the foam need to be inspected for water and rot. The transom needs to be looked at as well.

the stringers that i have uncoverd now seems to be solid with no evidence of rot their covered with resin and are solid to the touch with a tip of a screwdriver. is their another test to do to ensure stability?
the transom is solid and no visible damage or rot to be seen.ill post some pics here soon i could use all the advice i can get.thanks

Re: hull damage

Core samples need to be taken of the foam and wood in the boat. The screwdriver won't tell you anything. Drill in to the stringers with a small drill and look for wet shavings. Do a search on core sample and you'll find lots of info.

Looks like a delaminated area feathered to solid
