purple gunk on block...73 50hp rude

What is this purple stuff. i got this motor last summer. it ran fine in the tank but i noticed when i took the hood off and started looking around more i found this stuff that is hard to touch and peels off hard and is purple in color. it runs down below the stator.

That is the stator encapsulation melting. Usually due to a bad/shorted rectifier or bare wires.

what does that mean....new stator....or just rewire....

If someone brings it in my shop like this, it gets a stator and rectifier,no questions.

ok but what should i do i paid 400 for the motor and i just saw that stators are 200 for this motor....can i run it for a season and decide what to do or will i ruin the motor.

You need to fix the rectifier to stop stator from over heating.As for a new stator just use it till it fails, it may last one trip or 50 years!

Thanks for the info....very helpful.

this makes me think the guy sold it to me knowing it would need a new stator......what a jerk. i hate people who are shady.
