Hello,
I am having problems with my 30hp evinrude revving and coming out of gear from half throttle to full throttle. It reminds me of a spun prop as it only happens under heavier loads and on rough water. I have tried a different prop so it does not seem to be a case of a spun prop. Any thing else that I could easily check before taking it in to a mechanic and paying $80 an hour? Any ideas of what it may be? Anyone else had similar problems?

thanks in advance

Likely is a worn clutch dog and fwd gear. Does it come out of gear with a violent bang, like you've hit something? The frequency is likely to increase over time to the point you can't keep it in gear. Usually caused by "gentle", slow shifting ... correct technique is to shift briskly with no hesitation. Look at parts list on BRP's website to get an idea of what may be involved.

Possibly a shift linkage adjustment, but not too likely, unless someone has messed with the adjustment recently.Does it come out of gear?

The shifter on the side of the motor doesnt shift back into neutral and there is no sound other then reving, and then the boat slows down until I pull back the throttle. Once I pull back the throttle the boat will continue (as long as I keep at slower speeds.) On calm days I can run it wide open with no problems. Also I can tell sometimes that its going to happen because I can feel the back end of the boat pull from side to side before it "revs". I forgot to mention.....its a 1994, if that makes a difference.

Try marking the prop to test for a spun hub ... mark inner hub with splines and outer metal in a line ... if the lines move relative to each other=spun hub. The other possibilities are: 1) engine mounted too high and cavitating (rough water water would encourage this) 2) engine trimmed with too much kickout (bow high).
