Hi - just had my boat resprayed and all the holes which were filled are visible through the paint. The fibreglasser said its my boat and the dark blue color I chose. Any suggestions as to why this has occurred?

Thanks in advance

Re: Hole marks visible after respray

Not much info to go on, but here go's.

Dark colors show every defect, so it's much more difficult to do a spot repair, like fill a hole and not have it show. The other thing is dark colors get much hotter in the sun, this causes the filler, or whatever the hole was filled with to shrink more as time goes on. So even if it looked good in his shop, or even weeks later, at some time it may shrink and show through.

Now some of the info needed for a more exact answer.

What's the boat made of ( I assume fiberglass)?

What did he spray it with , gel coat or paint?

What size holes were they, snap screws, through hulls, dock rash?

How long has it been since it was repaired and sprayed?

Did they say the holes would be hidden completely?

Are they on the deck or hull?

How many holes are there?

Re: Hole marks visible after respray

Thanks for the reply,

Boat - fibreglass
painted with marine paint - i think its gel coat

holes - from snap crews and where lights were on the hull (through hole) - they go virtually around the entire boat (from the old cover).

Was resprayed 2 weeks ago - it has been fairly hot here and it does appear the filler has shrunk - They did tell me there would be no holes visible- even some of the old paint (a light blue) is showning up through the new spray .

$4500 worth of work - lots of touch up marks - just want to know if they have done a crappy job (cause I'm not happy) but they always give me some type of exuse.

Thanks again

There is a difference between gel coat and paint, plus there are big differences between types of paint too, so you should ask them what they used.

Many times just filler is used on small holes and like I said, it tends to shrink. Epoxy will shrink less, but costs more and is a little more difficult to work with, so most places won't use it. Using resin and glass to fill and cover each hole works better than just filler also, but again, it involves more time and money.
If it was just one or two snap screws they normally don't stand out that bad, but when they're in a line all the way around the boat, you see them right away.

If you can see the old color through the new paint then they should most definitely deal with that.

Without seeing the boat it?s difficult to say how bad it is, but it sounds like the only way to make you a happy customer would be to repaint it and that may be what it needs.
