1987 Alpha 1, 2008 5.7L 350. 300HP. I was reading through the manual and it stated that Merc went to an open ended exhaust bellows because the closed belows, clamped on both ends, may expand and push on the u-joint bellows. Can this be?
Thanks Roman

Is this something new, recently discovered? That sounds like a crock to me  and exactly what manual said that?

Re: One more Exhaust Bellows Question

I am guessing that he is actually referring to the exhaust tube.

Yeah, I got that, I'm well aware of them, I had that on one my boats, But what's with the normal orig. equip. ex. bellows damaging the u-joint bellows?

Exhaust Tube Use on V-8 Drive Shaft
Extension Models
Early MerCruiser IR-IMR V-8 Drive Shaft Extension
models were equipped with an exhaust bellows.
Later V-8 drive shaft extension models utilize an
exhaust tube. If servicing a unit equipped with an
exhaust bellows, bellows should be replaced with a
tube, as excessive exhaust gas back pressure will
result if bellows are used. In addition to affecting
performance, excessive pressure may cause
exhaust bellows to balloon out and contact U-joint
bellows, pushing them against U-joints. Eventually,
the U-joint bellows may chafe through with a
subsequent water leak resulting.

Now, just a simple question. Is this realy possible with an Alpha 1(1987) 2008 5.7l V8. My risers are 4 inch but reduce to 3 inch into the y-pipe. Thanks Roman

Re: One more Exhaust Bellows Question

I don't know what a Drive shaft extension model is? but either way, it sounds like an early Type 1 Drive, apparently it doesn't apply to an Alpha or Bravo of any type. This was probably revised, & updated, at the factory, with the right exhaust bellows, or tube, on all the later extension model drives.

Re: One more Exhaust Bellows Question

My clymers states exactly the same thing for a mercruiser 1 drive. I changed it years ago from a tube to a bellows. I am right now redoing all my bellows and my exhaust was pretty soft so I am going back to the tube that was originally on my boat.

Re: One more Exhaust Bellows Question

The manual I was refierring to was posted to me by Don. My post was October 24th. "Ujoint Bellows Install Direction". I don't know how to move it here yet. It would be good to hear from Don to see what he makes of the possibly of clamped(both ends) Exhaust bellows possibly expaning.

I don't have a clue what you are talking about. How about a manual number and a page number from the bottom left or right of the page so we can put it in context.
Something like manual #6 page 2A-12

He is quoting from service manual #6, page 4B-6.

Re: One more Exhaust Bellows Question

My local boat parts/service store recomended the exhaust tube as well. They said the bellows that clamps on both ends is the old style. The new one only clamps on the transom side. I just ordered the old style bellows anyways. It's worked for how many years?

Sounds like lazy installers. the tube has been around for many, many years so it is not very new. The bellows that clamps on both ends, is still what Merc installs from the factory today.
