115 johnson unsure of year

hello,
picked up johnson 115; told it was 1987; no tag on bracket, plug on powerhead says R8574898

can anybody confirm the year for me?

There was no 115 in 87.

Is it a crossflow or a looper? If it's a crossflow are the exhaust plates flat (between the heads) or do they have a hump towards the bottom.

That R number is a serieal number. A dealer can run it for you.

115 was made 1969-1985 then again starting 1990.


FAQ 17. I don't know what year outboard motor I have. Can you tell me how to find out?

the number is a model #, no published, contact a J/E dealer they can tell you.

OK, are the exhaust plates bolted on with a bunch of bolts or is the exhaust and block one casting?

Can an amateur determine whether an engine is a looper or crossflow just by looking at it?

Yes. A looper does not have any bolt on covers. The crossflows have exhaust plates / covers, intake by-pass covers and water jacket covers all bolted on. (Lots of bolts) The loopers have no covers over the exhaust or intake areas nor a water jacket cover on the heads.

Not to mention the 90* looper is flat out a bigger powerhead.

hello again. big bubble exhaust back is bolted on with many bolts (exhaust and block are not part of one casting).

note: i would not be suprised if the engine cover is not original (iow... maybe not a 115?)

Good Morning,

Any thoughts on what the year is? Recap: V4 CF (bubble back with lots of bolts and jackets on heads); cover says 115 Johnson; VRO (with tag that says ethanol safe).

Tag with model # missing.

Could be a 1985 or later 115 which is the same as the 1984 140. The 110 and 112 are the same also.

sounds good. i see when purchasing parts, i'm in a pretty wide range of years for a 115 carb rebuild... 1969, 1980-1995

amazing. i'm much happier working on this engine as opposed to the 125 force laying next to the boat now

The carb kits will be the ones for the 1980-95 (from your list).
