chrysler 55 battery polarity

I have just bought a chrysler 55 with electric start.I guess it is a 1970 s model as there is no ID plate.Can anyone tell me when i connect it to a battery is it a positive or negative ground.thanks FRED

negative ground. Black wire is - or ground

If you hooked them wires up backwards even for a second and if your motor has one you fried the rectifier. If your motor normally charges your battery it will not do so now if it is smoked. You can test the running voltage on the battery should be over 13 volts and under 13 volts when motor is off or at idle.
