1989 60 hp marinier water leak

I have a 60 HP Marinier 3 cyl. (1989 or 1990 I believe, SN OC169662) and the motor still runs great - However last week on vacation I had taken the cowel off and noticed water running down the back of the motor around the spark plugs - It did not appear to be comming from the plugs but was hard to tell with boat in water. - I pulled a plug and it did not look like water was in cylinders.

I have a repair manual on order but any ideas on where to start looking?

Hi,i just had the same issue on my 1989 merc 60.Pretty common for these to leak around the rear water jacket cover,which contains the water circulating about your cylinders and heads.About 10ea 7/16 hex head bolts will remove cover.Newer gaskets are better than what came on these in 89,I recommend spending the extra dollar(8 bucks vs 7) to get the oem gasket.Torque is 70 inch lbs for these 1/4-20 bolts.Sorry dont have the pn for the gasket handy.
