I have a mismatched lower unit / motor that causes reverse and forward to be switched, so i need powerhead linkage from the year of the lower unit to rectify the problem. Is there a part number or year anywhere?

ryan, you keep posting this, with out the year of your motor. we are not going back an hunt your old threads. you can get correct info with giving info. it also will be much easier to sell the wrong lower, and by the correct lower, than trying to chase down linkage, there are about 40 parts to it.

1975 JOHNSON SEAHORSE 70HP

I just want to know if i can tell the year of the lower unit to see if it is indeed the wrong one. If the lower and upper match up then something else is wrong. Just trying to avoid spending money I dont have to. Is there part numbers and/or years on the lower unit? If so where would it be

seriously doubt part # is on it. it would have a casting number, but they are not traceable. we have already determined you have the wrong unit. your motor is not the first one we have seen, it is a very common thing, that people do not research what they are doing under the shade tree. you need a 73-76 lower unit.

The very easy way to tell which is which is by looking at the skeg. The 1975 skeg drops straight down while the 1978 is angled back. Click the thumbnail below.

As previously mentioned, there are only 2 shift linkages from 1973 on. If the one you have works backwards (whatever year your powerhead is) just look up the other one in the parts manuals at shop.evinrude.com.

IE- if you have a 1978 powerhead & linkage go to that page in the parts book. Make a copy or memorize what it basically looks like. Then go back in years (1975 or so) and look at that shift linkage. When you get to one that's different than what you have, that's what you need.

Thanks for all the help, i am just gonna buy a new lower unit. My mechanic said that he's tried changing the linkages on situations like this and it never worked.
