anyone have some helpfull hints for removing the fasttrack PTT unit from motor used in salt water. it appears to be as simple as removing the external split rings from the piston pin and the pin through the PTT housing at the bottom of the stern brackets. but the pins are frozen d/t corrosion. what works best? heat? bigger hammer? disassembling the stern brackets? Help?

Welcome to iboats.

You are not the first, and will definately not be the last to have this problem, we all have.

Get a good penetrating oil. You will also need a BFH and a punch. Let it soak, then whack away. Be careful not to mushroom the end, since it will definately not work if that is the case. You may need to file down the end anyways, and have been told that drilling a small hole into the pin will prevent this, but am unsure about that. Heat also helps, if you have it. A propane torch will not be enough. If they are really seized, may need a press to get it out, with alot of heat again.

Thanks much for that rapid response. I guess it is as it seems, just needs alot of elbow grease and determination. Just a thought; would hoisting the motor and loosening and twisting the transom brackets help any? with the bottom pin at least?
