After too many months I finally got the boat into the water. Had a ball this evening. Didn't get out long, but long enough for a little swimming and then a little fishing. Littlest aspeck is starting to get good at casting and she caught her own fish today - from casting to hooking, to bringing them in. Dehooking class is next time! :D

It was a beautiful and relaxing evening, and one that was long overdue!

Re: Finally!

There is a certain look in a child's face as he/she discovers a new thing, that causes a certain look in a daddy's face as he watches his little boy or girl.

Both of those looks are priceless.

Re: Finally!

the family that boats together, stays together.

my sister is 50, i'm 10 years older, when she was 4 y/o, we were in a overloaded fishcamp boat. she caught a huge crappie, when it broke the water, it scared her, she threw the cane pole down, and screamed. Dad caught the pole. we all raved about the fish. a while later she was going thru the word can, Dad asked what she was doing. her answer " looking for a little worm, so she could catch a little fish." i will remember that day for ever.

That's such a great story! Seemed perfectly logical to her then.

"The family that boats together stays together"
I could not agree more.
We will be heading for our 2 week cottage trip on the 5th July. Our children (5) of them ages 20 to 28 are all coming with us. They are bringing their husbands, wives, boyfriends, girlfriends with them. My parents fly in from England one week today and will be joining us. Dad is 85 and Mom is 82.
Boating has given our family so many memories and kept us close together.
When one of our children asks to go "fishing" with me it usually means that they need to "talk" with me for help or advice. When they ask to go "boating" they just want to have fun out there.
There are some special times to be had while boating.

I think they like the fact that nobody can walk in on us and interrupt in the middle of the lake.
That and they have my undivided attention out there.

Re: Finally!

Yea, part of the reason for not getting out on the lake is because if I grab the rods the daughter wants to go ... and I enjoy some "serious" fishing from time to time, not just catching the small stuff, if you know what I mean. But Daughter doesn't have the patience or skill for that yet. I guess Daddy just needs the patience to teach her so I can get the chance to do some serious bass, striper, and muskie fishing and not always have to go for the catching of bluegill, rock bass, perch, etc.

Re: Finally!

I only had my boat out once this year and that was in the spring right after I got it out of storage. I ripped it apart to replace the transom and that took way longer than I would have liked. I just finished it up yesterday and I can't believe it's just about July already. We have a 9 month old though so I didn't think I was going to get a lot of boating in this year anyway. My birthday is Thursday and I told my wife all I wanted was for someone to watch our son and for the two of us to grab dinner and take the boat out for a while. Looking forward to it.

Re: Finally!

Some of my best memories growing up were formed on the water surrounded by family and friends. Art, I'm sure your daughter will recall the same as she grows.:):)

Re: Finally!

Great memory, TD!

I have a recent one, since I am an "old dude" raising a small child. I was in the car with my little man (he's just shy of 3) one day a couple of weeks ago, and it was raining "in buckets," just coming down hard as could be from a t-storm. About three or four minutes into the hardest part of the downpour, I hear from the middle row of my van, where his car-seat is, "daddy, turn off the water!"

I darn near had to pull over from laughing so hard!
