Have a Johnson 15 HP made in 1975. Has a tiller and electric start. Model # is 15EL75C. I was changing the coil and power pack and turned my back for a second. Had some helping hands disconnect the two plugs that come off the two , and I'm not sure which goes where. The top has an orange wire and the bottom has a blue one. On the other side of the plugs, one has two blue one's coming out of the plug and the other has two blue ones w/a white stripe on both of them. Thanks for any help. This is my first time at this so I hope I got it right. Thanks

ok, I found the wiring diagram for you... it's for a 74-76 9.9 and 15 electric start. should be what you have.

Hope it helps. The wife was getting cranky while I was looking for the diagram when the kids were wailing! :)

Steve:
Printed off your picture and went out to hook it up. Only difference in your picture and the motor is the picture has two coils, one on top and one below. Mine has a small box on top called a power pack best I can find out, and the coil under that is the same as in your picture. Do you think even though it's different if I hook the wires in the same place as shown, it would work? I'm guessing it's just a change in the model with a different part in place of the top coil?
Thanks, hope this don't get you into trouble with your wife.

I cant even hazard to guess the difference as I know nothing about that engine. Maybe a 9.9/15 wiz will step in here.

I wonder if your motor has had some jerry rigging done to it, since my motor (1975 9.9 Hp Evinrude, which as far as I know is supposed to be identical to your motor except the carburetor) does not have a powerpack. It does have two coils.

Re: 1974 Johnson 15 HP Wiring

Thanks all for the replys. I was told when I bought the two parts the one on top which is a black plastic box, was a power pack. but after doing more reading and looking on the internet, it to is called a coil even though it looks nothing like the bottom one. I'll go ahead and hook it up like Steves picture shows. There must be a change in the motor with a different model #
Thanks all, this is a great site to ask for and get help from.

I have a 74 9.9 and mine has two coils that are identical, one above the other.
Something strange going on.

If the coil got replaced at some point, it may not look like the original.
