Rebuilt Carbs now wont start. Help!

I have a 1983 Mercury 80 HP. It had not be running right last season and was stalling when I gave it throttle. I took it to a marina and they replaced the ignition module but that didn't fix the problem. It would start and idle, but would still bog down under throttle. Next the marina said they thought the carbs needed to be cleaned or rebuilt. So I rebuilt them both myself. Now I can't get the motor to even fire. Did I screw something up? Help.

Squirt some fuel mix in the carb throats and see if it will start, that should answer your question.

Did you clean the old carb body well with carb cleaner and make sure ALL of the internal ports are open and check the needle valve for the proper measurement? Also on mine there is an adjustment screw that sets the mixture, run it in too much and the carb will starve for fuel, not enough and the mix will be too rich and fowl the plugs. Have you rebuilt carbs before?

Re: Rebuilt Carbs now wont start. Help!

I tried squirting fuel into the carb throats and it did fire. So the problem is it is not getting fuel. This was my first time rebuilding carbs. It seemed pretty straightforward but obviously I did something wrong. The carbs actually seemed pretty clean when I took them apart, but I cleaned all the ports with carb cleaner anyway. I used a rebuild kit and replaced the inlet needle valve and seat, the float, float lever, idle needle and spring. I adjusted the float to the right height and I think I did that right. What is the most likely place I could have made an error?

Is the fuel pump an intergral part of the carb? You may have inadvertatly gotten the small flappers for the fuel pump messed up.
