Voltage Guage Pins/Peaks

I have a 1997 Merc 150HP that when I am crusing at mid to moderate speeds the Voltage gauge peaks and stays there till I slow down. Can anyone help me with this?????

First check the battery connections and then put a shop voltmeter on it and if it shows the gauge to be right the rectifier/regulator is bad.

Follow Laddies advice. Exactly what I would do.

Even if the regulator is bad, the only way the gauge is going to go over 16 volts is if the battery is effectively disconnected (dirty connections) or is dried up or toast.
