Does anyone know something about a Gila Buccaneer outboard? I am told it was manufactured by Johnson. The one I am looking at is 25 hp. I don't know how old it is. I would like to pull a compression check on it, but I am not sure what it should be. Any info would help.

get the model # we can tell by that. i would like to see 100+ psi, but more important is that they are equal within 10%.

Re: Gila Buccaneer outboard

That would be a Gale, made by the Gale Products Division of Outboard Marine Corporation (Johnson & Evinrude's then parent company). It is indeed very similar to a Johnson or Evinrude 25. If it is a 25hp, then it is from the mid-late 1950s. Decent motors. Real stump pullers for low end torque. Very similar to the 1956 Johnson and Evinrude 30s. As TD noted, compression is good above 100 psi...

I have an early 60's Gale Buccaneer with a fibreglass hood so they made them into the 60's also. Not sure for how long though.
