I am trying to find out if Bombardier made 115hp e-tec in 2000 or 2001. I am repowering a 22' prokat and have found (according to seller) a pair of 115hp 2000 or 20001 rebuilt e-tecs with a five year warranty. Any response to this inquiry, good or bad, would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks-----LLOW2

Re: e-tec outboards

They cannot be E-Tec motors. The seller is mis-informed. E-Tec's were not in production for a couple of years after that. Most likely they are FICHT motors...

Yup -- direct injected FICHT, but certainly not E-tec.

FICHT, and if they cannot be proven to be completely updated to BRP specs I would not have them as gifts.

If this is what the seller told you it almost sounds like an outright scam! 5 year warranty on 8 year old rebuilt outboards?!?!?!

Bombardier did not start producing Evinrudes until the 2002 model year, about 7 months after their winning bid in OMC's bankruptcy auction.

The 115 E-TEC first came out as a 2007 model.

Someone is feeding you incorrect info.

When fichts act up it commonly blows the head, that's probably why his are rebuilt. The guy won't be able to give those fichts away...even ones that were "updated" and rebuilt. Run, don't walk, from the deal or buy the rig at price of only the hull value.

Stop pouring beer in the oil container....
Just because it lubes your insides.....
Doesn't mean it'll lube a boat

Re: e-tec outboards

I have been doing alot of reading on this sit the last couple days my eyes are sore. From what I can see the Ficht is not a popular motor with people. I wanted to upgrade motors on my boat and eventually bought a Merc EFI, and changing out my Johnson. I have to change controls it seems so is it worth the extra money for controls and such compared to buying the Ficht? Did I do the right thing?
I have been second guessing myself since I bought it.

Re: e-tec outboards

so far I havent made it to the dealer :)
2 pairs of Bravo II drives kept me a tad busy at work.
thats the whole bummer of blowing the motor, no beer on the boat :)
but I am off monday so ill run it up and we can have a look.
worst part? I am a master Yamaha tech and I had to call a co-worker to come tow me with his new G-3 with a 90 yamaha :).
I still hear about it and most likly will awhile

Re: e-tec outboards

I finally had to take the hood off today, first time since I bought it :).
#4 piston is smoke and I can see metal chunks in the lower cowling.
will be interesting to see what failed and why.
could be I just dont use it enough.
I try to do the winterization thing almost everytime I use it as I know synthetic oils dont give quite as good a corrosion protection during long periods of idle time.
I did test run it the wednesday before I blew it saturday with a run from wanchese to colington and back, 30 miles or so.
but prior to that it was last oct or so when it was last run.

Re: e-tec outboards

The ficht wasn't a bad engine, it had it's teething problems just like every other engine on the marked. I just got rid of my 99 ficht with the update kit, and it ran perfect from the day I bought it to the day I sold it. You will find most of the people that had problems, run them hard from the first start of the day until the key is shut off at the end of the day. No other engines are holding up to that...deff. not the mercs. Don' t be affraid of the ficht....

Re: e-tec outboards

If I were a betting person, I would bet on a loose/broken bearing cap nut w/a thrown piston rod. That is what my Merc did on me years ago. No warning and all of sudden, sounded like a can full of marbles rolling around.
