how do you loosen serpentine belt on volvo i/o

I need to replace a failing raw water pump on my 2003 Volvo 5.0 OSi I/O - I'm not sure where the belt tension location is to loosen the serpentine belt - I don't see it around the alternator - can someone help - thanks - Longpoint

It will be a pulley with nothing attached to it's rear.

Just a guess, but check the idler pully,on M/C motors it`s adjustable.
loosen the locknut a bit and the main bolt should move up or down

The tensioner pulley has a square hole in it. (just like the automotive version) Use a ratchet to relieve tension

be very very careful when applying pressure, best to have a helper. that square in the casting will break easily.
dont ask.

You must be really strong rodbolt, I've loosened a few of them on several GM products and not busted one! Excellent picture Don, thanks. Sure wish Mercruiser had used that on my 1997 model 5.7!

I've changed hundreds of belts, and never broken one. Are you sure you were pulling in the right direction?

Most idler pulleys have more metal around the area that you put the ratchet into. The Volvo one appears to be pretty skimpy in that area.

Bruce, those pulleys are GM, not Volvo.
We needed one in a hurry one time, and got it at the GM dealer. Same exact thing.
