Ok, being that we are all just sitting around goofing off..... now you have to throw a guess out there. Anyone can do it with a calculator but the fun is hearing all the estimates that people put out.

You have a hole 1 mile square and 1 mile deep and it is full of water. you have a pump that pumps 1000 gallons per minute. How long would it take the pump to empty the hole?

Re: Another brain teaser

Wow, it's a rather surprising answer.

Thats 1,101,117,143,808 gallons of water.

It would take 45,879,880,992 days to drain it if the pump could consistently maintain 1000 gph.

Thats 125,698,304 years.

So in the year 125700312 A.D., it will be empty.

I'm sure we'll all look forward to that.

he said 1000 gal per minute, thats 764664.68 days or 2093.5 years, still a surprising answer. Guess thats why 1000 gpm is a small pump :D

How on earth are you going to dropshot a brushpile that is a mile deep? Bring it down to 30 feet or so, and I'll be happy.:D

.... pumps 1000 gallons per minute....

Is that a gallon or a US gallon?

If it's a gallon, then it will take 2,093 years and 6 months.
If it's a US gallons, then it will take 2,516 years.

Less than 2 years. Reason why it's so low? You're not taking evaporation or the "borrowing" by northern california for irrigation into account. :D

It doesn't matter. A square mile is a square mile.

Oh, contrair, it does in deed matter. If the pump is in US gallons, then it is only pumping 3780 litres a minute. If it's gallon, then that 4550 litres a minute....

I just did the math, it would be approx 2093.5 years with all figures in US gallons. FYI there are 7.48052 US gal per cubic FT.
