As Vic said, look for the welch plug on the top rear of the motor. Will be about the size of a quarter, and will have the model number on it.

AS you may have noticed, I am not the most experienced person with these engines so please tell me what the "welch" plug is. Top rear, is that below the fuel tank, on the head??? mines been painted over so i have to use stripper on appropriate areas like i had to on bracket where model no. was.

Re: 4hp Seahorse, repairs and parts in UK

tell me what the "welch" plug is.
Its a round slightly domed disc that blocks a hole that's necessary in the casting process. I deliberately called it a core plug in the hope you'd know what that meant meant. Dunno how big a "quarter" is but the plug in my '84 6hp is about 2cm or so diameter. In the diagram on the brp site for my engine it is is clearly visible but I cannot see it in the diagrams for a 79 4hp or the earlier '75 version either. Look for a disc about that sort of size slightly recessed in a hole. Won't be in the head I don't think. If there is one it'll be in the cylinder block.

It struck me that the 79 model looks a lot different to the 76 and earlier models. Totally different engine covers to begin with and the recoil starter in the later one is in the top of the cover and engages with the top of the flywheel. In the earlier one it is on the side of the engine and a toothed wheel engages with a ring gear round the edge of the flywheel.

Im having trouble locating welch plug.
Vic.S, The recoil on my engine is in the top and the 1 pawl comes out and engages with fins on top of the flywheel. No toothed flywheel, you will see below

I have uploaded some pictures to help you tell me where the welch plug is! No numbers visible but could be painted over.

Pictures are at these addresses.

Thanks for that. Ok, but there are no numbers! I shall have another look tomorrow and strip the paint.

The first thumbnail below is another view of the same part as in my earlier markup. The second is from Paul Moir's 4hp [1972].

There are some good shots of the 4HP in Paul's workup:

ezeke, That thing is a small metal thing, size of 5p, or 5c or something, silver but it was covered in oxides so I m presuming its aluminium.
I will strip the paint on the welch plug to see any numbers.

No thats not a welch plug and i can see that there is no plug where i was looking either. I dont reckon there is one on this engine, at least I cannot see one in any of Paul Moir's photos.

Is the model number on anything else?

At the moment it all looks like the '79 model. Engine cover and starter fixed in the cover (You now know you should not have undone the screw in the top of the cover!) but with the older points type ignition system. Is it a "bitsa" or is the brp site wrong in showing a cd system for '79

Vic.S

It could be bitsa becuase I got it from a marine place in somerset and they may have tinkered with it. Not entriely sure saying that, the bolts holding the bracket to the mid section are all rusty so have been there for a while. On the other hand, I don't know if BRP get stuff like this wrong very often.

I am yet to strip paint on that red circled thing to see if there is a number, I will do that now to be sure.

no luck on that red circled item. I stripped all paint and no sign of numbers. I had another check over the engine and couldnt find a thing.

Could someone tell me the size of the flywheel nut?

Re: 4hp Seahorse, repairs and parts in UK

My first thoughts were that it was an older model, '76 or earlier, fitted onto a '79 transom bracket but other things indicate that not to be the case.

A bit of a puzzle Either the points sytem contiued into '79 or its had an older magneto fitted, if that's possible.

Flywheel nut

The nut on my 6hp fits a 3/4" AF spanner. That makes it 1/2" unf or unc. They are 20tpi and 14 tpi resectively but I am not planning to take the nut off to see which it is. UNC I expect.
Is yours 3/4" AF

no idea! I didn't want to have to fork out the ?6 higham marine would charge for the nut! Hoping I could get it from a hardware store. I will probably buy another engine, there is a seized one on ebay at the moment here in the UK, 99p so far, I might bid. It is same model so would be good for lots of spares.

Well i bought the whole recoil assy off ebay, looked the same so should fit, i asked questions before i paid but ?25 not bad for recoil assy, hood, flywheel nut and some gasket paper.

?25 not bad for recoil assy, hood, flywheel nut and some gasket paper
but rather more than ?6 if its only the nut you wanted!

What size is it anyway 1/2" or less? UNC or UNF?

Re: 4hp Seahorse, repairs and parts in UK

not sure, looks like 1/2 inch. but i needed the recoil assy aswell, higham wanted ?60 for it and ?6 for the nut, so ?25, compared to ?66 is good!!
