I just replaced my stator and I am not sure I have it clocked correctly. My Clymer manual does not show this. I have an OEM manual ordered just this morning. If anyone has a motor like this or an OEM manual can you tell me if I have it turned correctlyMerc1982_80HP.jpg

As long as the wires come down the side without interfering with any thing it will be fine the stator does not have to be timed it will work any direction it is put on

Thanks so much Laddies, I have replaced the stater and the trigger now I can install the flywheel hookup my wires put it all togetherm, and see if I have spark at the plugs. If I do my next project is the water pump. This is a project boat, and I can see why BOAT stands for bank on another thousand. I do not have unlimited funds hope this does the trick.

Can anyone tell me the part number of the OEM shop manual for this motor the serial # 6234182 it is a 80HP think 1982 or 1983. The mercury dealer I talked to today said he could not find the number for it. The Clymer manual did show me all I needed and I hate to buy a Seloc for the same reason
Thanks

Your engine is a 1983, the manual I use is for inline engines from 74 thru 150HP and lists the 80s from serial number 4590512 and up which includes you engine, it's part number 90-86134--4. Hope this helps

Well I have the stator and trigger in correctly now I hope. I put fresh gas/oil misture in tank, pumped the bulb, I am gettong gas coming out around the fuel pump, my question is this should I just go ahead and buy a fuel pump repair kit or just a new gasket, this boat has been sitting for years

I got my fuel leak to stop. I hooked up the muffs to it and the motor would spin but then quit, spin and then quit. I feel that I have the timing off. Do I take the flywheel back off and make sure the piston is at the top stroke then?

Laddies once I pull the plug and check to make sure the piston is at top, do I just set the flywheen so the poiner is at the tdc mark? I thought the flywheel would only go on one way because of the groove on the flywheel. Thanks for the help!

Yes the pointer should be at TDC, what happens is some people ermove the flywheel by removing the hub bolts and don't index the fluwheel when reintalling it

Exactly that. You don't even have to remove the flywheel unless you find that it is wrong. Just get cylinder #1 to TDC and check that the mark on your flywheel corresponds to the TDC timing mark. It'll either be out by a lot, or not at all.

I don't know if your's is an inline6, so you might want to check this procedure in your Clymer

Thanks for all the help, if I understand correctly if the number 1 piston is at the top then the pointer should line up with the mark on the flywheel if it doesnt the flywheel needs to be turned 180 ?

Yep, but it's not 180. On your flywheel you will see a ring of bolts. If there's 8 bolts it means the flywheel can be out by 360/8=45deg or any factor of 45. If there's 12 bolts it can be out by any factor of 360/12=30deg. This is assuming that someone stripped the flywheel hub from the magnet ring in that fashion.

I put a spark tester on my motor tonight and watched for a spark but didnt get one. If I have the timing off shouldnt it still get a spark?
